New Delhi: The Supreme Court said Wednesday that liquor consumption cannot be controlled by utilizing Aadhaar cards. The court was responding to the argument that complete liquor prohibition is not practical and that it must be controlled through Aadhaar cards.
The court also commented sarcastically whether the demand is for instituting subsidy for liquor.
The hearing on state government’s arguments on the appeal filed by bar owners against the liquor policy in now over.
“Liquor is available in plenty at shops run by beverages corporation. The history of the formulation of liquor policy must be examined. The government implemented the bar license policy stage by stage. It is not correct to say that one has the right to renew the license just because the person already possessed a license,” SC said.
The Supreme Court also made it clear that citizens do not have rights to consume liquor at public places.
The bar owners’ raised the argument that the government decision to permit only five star hotels to sell and serve liquor was discriminatory.They also pointed out that it is not correct to apply equal rights in certain matters only.
